Discipline Priest

Damage prevention with Power Word: Shield, Divine Aegis and Penance; superb on tanks.

Updated

Based on beta data (level 30 cap); will be updated as Forever details are confirmed. Stat priorities are provisional.

How Discipline plays

Discipline prevents damage with big absorbs from Power Word: Shield and Divine Aegis. It is very strong on tanks, rotating Power Word: Shield, Penance and Heal. Penance and Smite also add damage when healing is quiet; watch the mana cost on long fights.

Priests bring raid buffs: Power Word: Fortitude, Divine Spirit and Power Infusion on a long cooldown.

Core spells

Spell Use
Power Word: Shield Main absorb; applies Weakened Soul (15 s, shortened when your single-target heals crit)
Penance Heal on an injured target, or damage
Renew Keep it up on the tank
Heal / Greater Heal Filler heal / bigger, costlier heal; cancel if the target is topped
Prayer of Healing Main AoE heal
Smite, Holy Fire Damage when healing is light

Single target

  1. Power Word: Shield on the active tank.
  2. Penance if they are injured.
  3. Keep Renew on them.
  4. Heal while Penance is on cooldown; Greater Heal for more. Cancel the cast if they are full.

Group healing

  1. Prayer of Healing on an injured party.
  2. Power Word: Shield on anyone in urgent danger; less efficient but instant.

Ranks and downranking

Lower ranks can be more mana-efficient. Wowhead’s Discipline guide says ranks learned more than 18 levels ago are penalised, so keep your current rank and the previous two or three bound. Downranking matters most in raids; in the open world and most dungeons you can stop and drink.

Mana

Cancel heals that would overheal, downrank, and treat Inner Focus as a regular mana saver rather than an emergency button.

Cooldowns

Stat priority (provisional)

  1. Healing Power
  2. Intellect
  3. Spirit
  4. Spell Crit
  5. Spell Damage
  6. Stamina

Dungeons and raids

  • Dungeons: shield the tank and keep Penance on cooldown; add Smite or Holy Fire on easy pulls if mana allows.
  • Raids: shields on tanks and players about to take big hits; Prayer of Healing for party damage; Fear Ward where fears happen.
